It is well crafted and strong with a smooth back but not heavy

kanaga masks are worn at rituals called dama

the masks served to conceal the soul

The shape of the circular design as well as the shape

This mask came from a single collection of masks that showed extensive use & original wear and tear

An example such as this one was highly venerated and signs of extensive ritual wear show this could have been used in a home or local temple for the purposes of religious practice

The history and information is scarce on this subject and much more research is needed I believe on this genre of collection

they need to be studied in context

The patina is rich and the texture of the of the wood is smooth and silky
